Elemental Hot & Cold Stones (Miscellaneous Magic Items):

These, like Crystals of Light, are among the most common magic items on the Palladium World. Because they are so common, they are often forgotten about in books describing magic items. They com in a variety of different types. Like the Crystal of Light, they are not permanent and normally burn out in ten to twenty years. Still, they are extremely useful to both the common, if wealthy, person and the adventurer. Normally they are sold with pouches which are impervious to their magic. There are two basic styles to the stone. One is a small stone which is rounded and looks like a rounded stone. The other is a flat stone which one side only is enchanted. On one sided stone, one side of the stone has the elemental symbol for the element with water used for the Cold Stone.

Elemental Hot stones are usually made from Granite or Volcanic Glass. The stone basically creates heat on it. There are many uses for these items. They can be used to cook food, either through dropping a smaller rock in the food cooking, can be used to heat baths, and to keep a house or tent to name just a couple of uses for this item. Some create a moderate heat around 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65.5 degrees Celsius) and some create a greater heat of around 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121.1 degrees Celsius.) While these stones can cause blisters, there is no risk of fire. The moderate version can be tucked into clothing to keep the wearer warm due to not having as much of a risk of causing burns.

Elemental Cold stones are made from stones usually from a river bed or those from a glacier and can almost any stone. The stone basically absorbs heat from around itself and like the Hot stones, are extremely useful. A stone carried in a backpack will keep any food in there fresher longer and is useful for the simple job of cooling drinks. A second use is as a method to keep fevers down. Some in hot climates even used these stones to keep themselves cool. Like the hot stones, the stones come in two different strengths. One is always around 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) while the other is around 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17.8 degrees Celsius) and will produce ice in water around it.
