Petra Sangre:

Name: Petra Sangre.

True Name: Petra Denwori.

Alignment: Unprincipled (Good / Selfish).

M.D.C.: 331.

Attributes: I.Q.: 18 (+4%), M.E.: 14, M.A.: 15, P.S.: 34 (+19), P.P.: 23 (+4), P.E.: 29 (+28%/+7), P.B.: 19 (45%), SPD: 20 [Physical Strength and Endurance are Supernatural].

Height: 6 foot 2 inches (1.88 meters). Weight: 165 lbs (74.84 kg).

Age: 36 years (Looks mid twenties). Race: Catyr. Sex: Female. P.P.E.: 12.

Disposition:

Even though some might consider her to be a pirate, she has a strong hatred of whom she considers to be true pirates. She considers herself to be fighting for a cause, fighting against those who would take advantage of those whom are not able to defend themselves. Has a strong hatred for those who take captives. Besides actual pirates, she has a strong hatred for the Trans-Galactic Empire and the Splugorth worlds.

Petra is however a practical sort. If she can capture a ship intact, she will sell the ship to help support her own vessel. Those who are damaged are stripped of anything that is useful. The one thing she will never do is take captives and any prisoners are either executed, left marooned on a planet, or brought to the authorities for them to deal with. If a captive has a bounty, there will be an effort made to collect the bounty if possible.

Having been raised by the crew of the Vindictive, she considers the crew to be her family. She is extremely loyal to them. Of course, many have retired over the years and there have also been numerous casualties. At first the fact that many of the crew are older than her and helped to raise her made it uncomfortable commanding them. Still, she eventually became comfortable leading them and is in no way a task master. Still, she expects her crew to be disciplined.

Even though she is trained in power armor combat, she does not prefer to be involved directly in boarding actions. Instead, she considers it to be her job to command the ship in combat. This does not mean she is afraid of combat but considers a captain who gets involve in personal combat is abandoning her duty.

Even though she likes company well enough, avoids relationships of such a nature with her crew. This does make her a bit lonely at times but much of the time is so busy that she can push it to the back of her mind. Prefers relationships with other women over men. While she considers her crew to be her adopted family, it has not stopped her from cherishing the memories of her birth family.

Does have some secrets such as how the ship is actually financed. Only a few other senior officers know the secret so that if something happens to her, the ship may be able to continue to operate. Will only tell those in senior positions about the ship’s secret backers.

Background:

Petra was one of the first generation born on the planet of Sun-Yet. Settled from the Consortium of Civilized Worlds, there was a lot of promise with the population growing rapidly. Settlers included Humans, Noro, Catyr, Wolfen, and a smattering of other sentient groups. All seemed bright for the future with industry flourishing and the system having a small but capable self defense force. There was plenty of wilderness and her family lived in an isolated region in what might be described as a ranch. In many ways, she had an idyllic childhood. This was not to continue however.

Pirates almost never attack well defended ships or star systems. Simply, the costs rarely equal the benefit of such attacks. With a powerful fleet including a cruiser, a pair of escort carriers, and a fair number of destroyers, the system was considered pretty secure. However, a huge fleet appeared in the system. The force was huge, outnumbering the self defense force three to one. Composed of largely older Trans-Galactic Empire warships, included in the force were several cruisers.

Even though badly outnumbered, the self defense force tried to fight the pirate forces. Even though badly outnumbered, the planetary population believed that their defenders would be ultimately victorious. The destroyers were soon destroyed and the escort carriers soon had virtually no surviving fighters. Even the cruiser Paragon was soon forced to retreat. If it had continued to fight, it would have soon been destroyed as well. Before it fled, it picked up a handful of surviving fighters.

The cruiser Paragon however waited in the outer system, hoping to help those on the planet once the pirates departed. Landing in force, the pirates stripped the orbital community as well as the planet. In addition, large part of the population were grabbed, especially the most skilled. A huge number of engineers and scientists were kidnaped and enslaved.

The pirates appeared to be ready to depart the system. Suddenly, the pirate ships opened fire on the planet in close range bombardment. This was almost unprecedented, yet another item of evidence leading many to believe that they were not really pirates. It was almost systematic with energy weaponry bombarding every city and every town on the planet. A side effect of the bombardment was fires breaking out all over the planet, blackening the skies.

Finally, the pirates departed the system. The cruiser and the two escort carriers quickly returned so that they might rescue whomever they could. The crew of the three warships rescued as many as they could but many more died in the meantime. One of the few which they were able to rescue was Petra. If she had been a human, it is quite likely that she would not have survived long enough to be rescued. As it was, her entire family was dead.

Even though they rarely get involved in systems outside of Consortium space, a massive rescue fleet was sent by the Consortium government. There were few remained to rescue and the entire planet had been plunged into a winter that stretched almost pole to pole, killing virtually all of the remaining vegetation and animals. Such a winter would last for decades, making the planet virtually uninhabitable.

No longer having a star system to call home, the three surviving warships had to decide where to go next. The captains of the two escort carriers decided to join mercenary companies with one joining the Tri-Galactic Military Service. The captain of the cruiser however swore revenge against those whom destroyed his home and those like them. These included pirates and the Trans-Galactic Empire, whom the captain suspected of helping the pirates. At the same time he renamed the cruiser the Vindictive.

Most of the survivors settled on various worlds within the Consortium, in general just wanting some peace. A few however decided to join. At the same time, the life of a privateer did not sit well with some of the crew and they decided to go their own way as well. Being that she was so young, one might expect Petra to settle on a quiet world somewhere but she was effectively adopted by the crew of the heavy cruiser.

The cruiser went after the pirates, following clues where it led them. Many of the pirate ships split up almost as soon as the raid was done. Rumors were that many of the captives had been taken to Splugorth controlled space. The Vindictive was able to track down a handful of pirates but many were much harder to catch.

Going after the Trans-Galactic Empire put the ship in contact with the Free World Council who offered the cruiser a letter of privateering. In addition, the power would purchase captured equipment from the empire along with giving the ship a place to be able to make repairs.

Growing up aboard the heavy cruiser, Petra soon learned the skills of a starship crew. There was some concern with a child being aboard a ship which went into battle but she thrived aboard. Learned how to operate power armors with the ship having a number of K-Universal armors which they captured from the Splugorth. In addition, she showed a natural gift for warship tactics from an early age.

As time went on, Petra was given more responsibility aboard the cruiser. Even though only twenty-five at the time, she was given the position of executive officer. The previous second in command had decided to retire. After a while, the life of a privateer might wear on someone. Over the years, a number of crew having decided that they had enough and decide to retire.

It took a few years for her to settle into the position of executive officer with a few crew resenting her being younger than many people junior to her. Most of the crew however soon accepted her in the position as second in command.

Serving on a warship is dangerous as well, especially a privateer which enters into combat regularly. Actually, it is far more dangerous aboard the Vindictive than it is most cruisers in most militaries such as the Consortium Armed Forces. Nobody onboard is immune including the captain. Even though the bridge of a cruiser is well armored, it does not mean that one cannot be killed there. A heavy laser penetrated through thick armor and multiple layers of armor killing Captain Acke Radboud instantly.

On the secondary bridge, Petra was unharmed. Even if she had been on the main bridge, she likely would have survived due to her ability to withstand far more than a human could. Taking command, Petra was able to bring the Vindictive through the battle even though not without severe damage.

After the conclusion of the battle, the crew needed to decide who would become the new captain. Petra herself did not know if she was ready to become captain at the time. Still, she was elected by the crew. She has mostly followed the same path as the previous captain, continuing engaging pirates as well as the Trans-Galactic Empire and the Splugorth.
