Coalition VTT-2 Medium Lift Twin Tilt Rotor:
The sight of a Death Head’s Transport overhead in enough to strike fear into those whom the Coalition considers their enemies. The think is that for the most part the real work is done by more conventional designs. The Coalition operates tilt rotor designs, both twin rotor and quad rotor models, for a variety of VTOL roles. Such designs are much simpler to maintain and less expensive to operate. Lower powered fusion reactors can be used for the same amount of cargo.
While tilt rotor designs can be used for some light military roles, they are considered more of a support design than thrust based airborne VTOL transports such as the Death’s Head Transport. They are also used in what one might consider the civilian side of Coalition society. Both cargo and personnel tend to be transported using tilt rotor designs.
The VTT-2 Medium Lift Twin Engine Tilt Rotor is quite common in the Coalition, serving all the roles that the quad model tilt rotor is considered too heavy for. It is a fair amount larger than the Pre-Rifts V-22 Osprey operated by the United States military before the coming of the Rifts. For example, it is about seventy-five feet long. Otherwise the Coalition tilt rotor looks relatively similar to the old Osprey design. The Coalition twin tilt rotor shares some features with the quad design including the fact that both designs use the same rotors.
Unlike most more modern design, the aircraft does not have a skull design as part of the actual design. Instead, the aircraft is painted with a skull design in the nose with an otherwise black fuselage. Since it is not generally considered a weapon of war in the same sense as a Death Head Transport or a SAMAS power armor, there does not seem to be much interest in redesigning the aircraft to incorporate the skull design.
Maximum cargo load in the cargo hold is around fifteen tons. Unlike the quad tilt rotor, the twin tilt rotor has the ability to sling cargoes underneath the aircraft. A maximum of around ten tons can be carried in such a manner. Up to fifty passengers can be carried or around thirty heavily armed personnel. These include power armor troops and cyborg soldiers. There are only a comparative handful of Coalition combat vehicles which can be carried in the cargo hold however.
While the VTT-2 Twin Tilt Rotor has a slightly better cruise speed than the VQT-4 Quad Tilt Rotor, is still far slower than most thrust based designs. Cruising speed is considered to be around two hundred and eighty knots with a top speed of around three hundred and twenty knots. Even though the engines are designed to give effectively indefinite range, the flight system will overheat if operated continuously. The flight system will after around twenty four hours at normal cruising speed and will overheat much more rapidly if operated significantly above normal cruising speeds.
In comparison to the quad tilt rotor design, while many twin tilt rotor are armed, not all are. If armed, the aircraft carries a pair of lasers similar to those carried on the aircraft’s larger cousin. Both are mounted under the fuselage and are basically modified version of the weaponry carried on both the Spider Skull Walker and the Coalition Sky Cycle. Unlike the larger design, the twin rotor design does not have the short range missile turrets.
Tilt rotor type designs are often criticized that their rotors are a weakness. This is often over exaggerated however. Otherwise, the tilt rotor is protected by light armor made from high strength composites and alloys. Even so, the materials used are not the cutting edge used in many newer designs. They are generally considered adequate for a super aircraft design.
Production of these aircraft date from around the formation of the Coalition. Since then there has only been the most minor of modifications. There appears to be no plans to replace the twin tilt rotor design and it is believed that production will continue for the foreseeable future. It is believed that there are many thousand in service with the Coalition.
Over the years, a number of these aircraft have been captured by various groups. As they are not the war weapons that the Death’s Head Transport are and do not have any real advanced technology, there is not much concern in high command. Periodically one can be found for sale on the black market. However, non Coalition designs tend to dominate the market.

Notes:
[1] Destroying a wing will cause the plane to crash if in flight.
[2] Destruction of rudders or one elevator will still allow the aircraft to be controlled by the varying of power levels of the engines but aircraft has a penalty of -10 to dodge, and a -30% penalty to all piloting rolls. Destruction of both of the elevators will leave the plane uncontrollable and pilot must eject to survive. The destruction of one of the engines will cause the aircraft to crash if in flight.
[3] Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body will shut the aircraft down completely, rendering it useless and causing it to crash if in flight.
Speed:
Driving on Ground (Taxiing): Only possible for take offs and landings as well as for parking and storage. Speed is 40 mph (64 kph) when traveling on the runway / air field and not on take off or landing. The aircraft can make both short take off and landings as well as true vertical take off and landings. In addition, the tilt rotor aircraft can land and take off from primitive air fields.
Flying: The Coalition VTT-2 Medium Lift Twin Tilt Rotor can hover and go up to a maximum speed of 320 knots (368.3 mph, 592.6 km/hour). Normal cruise speed for the aircraft is 280 knots (322.2 mph / 518.5 kph).
The Coalition VTT-2 can hover stationary up to 8,000 feet (2,438.4 meters) and can fly up to 30,000 feet (9,144.0 meters) if not hovering.
With an underslung cargo load, speed is limited to 200 knots (230.2 mph / 370.4 kph).
Range: Effectively Unlimited but does overheat when operated for long periods of time. The engines of the Coalition VTT-2 will overheat after 12 hours of continuous operation when running at top speed and 24 hours when run at 280 knots (322.2 mph / 518.5 kph) or under.
Statistical Data:
Width, Rotors Turning: 128.8 feet (39.26 meters)
Rotor Diameter: 62.2 feet (18.96 meters).
Fuselage Height: 23.3 feet (7.10 meters).
Fuselage Length: 75.4 feet (22.98 meters)
