Revised Palladium Shield Types:

Buckler: Small shield, usually round but not exclusively, and is usually made from metal but also sometimes made from wood or even boiled and hardened leather. Usually carried on the hip and used by most types of mercenaries and soldiers. In addition, Bucklers were also carried by civilians.

Usual shield diameter is between 12 and 18 inches (0.30 and 0.46 meters.) Weights are between one and three pounds (0.45 to 1.36 kg.)

S.D.C.: Steel: 70. Wood (Metal Reinforced): 50. Wood / Leather: 30.

Costs: Steel: 95 gold. Wood (Metal Reinforced): 65 gold. Wood / Leather: 35 gold.

Round Shield: Medium sized shield which is usually round as the description implies. Can be center grip or have straps to be carried. Shield can be made of wood, wood reinforced by metal, leather, or even metal in some cases. Wood shields usually are several planks glued together. There are also oval versions of the shield. Shield may be metal rimmed and have a metal boss. Shield can be easily carried on the back.

Usual shield diameter is between 24 and 36 inches (0.61 and 0.91 meters.) Weights are between 5 and 12 pounds (2.27 and 5.44 kg) with a comfortable average between 7 and 9 lbs (3.18 and 4.08 kg.)

S.D.C.: Steel: 130. Wood (Metal Reinforced): 100. Wood / Leather: 60.

Costs: Steel: 180 gold. Wood (Metal Reinforced): 110 gold. Wood / Leather: 75 gold.

Kite Shield: Medium sized shield which may have a flat top to the shield. Can also be teardrop shaped. Shield may be made from just solid wood or may be made from wood reinforced by metal or leather. Can even include parchment in the construction of the shield. Some shields may have bosses as well and may be metal rimmed. The length of the shield makes it effective in protecting the wielder’s legs.

Shields may be up to 45 inches (1.14 meters) in length. Weights are between 6 and 12 lbs (2.72 and 5.44 kg.)

S.D.C.: Wood (Metal Reinforced): 100. Wood / Leather: 60.

Costs: Wood (Metal Reinforced): 110 gold. Wood / Leather: 75 gold.

Heater Shield: Small to medium sized shield similar in form to the Kite shield. Shields can be made from wood or can be wood reinforced with metal strips. Often also covered with leather or parchment. Shields generally do not have a boss but may also be metal rimmed. Heater shield are commonly carried by knights and may often have heraldry on them.

Shields may be from 12 inches to 24 inches (0.30 to 0.61 meters) in width. Weights are between 4 and 7 lbs (1.81 and 3.18 kg.)

S.D.C.: Wood (Metal Reinforced): 75. Wood / Leather: 45.

Costs: Wood (Metal Reinforced): 80 gold. Wood / Leather: 50 gold.

Tower / Wall Shield: Large shields which may be rectanglar but may also have rounded edges. Shields are usually wood and may be reinforced with metal strips and may be covered in leather. Usually the shields are made from multiple layers of thin strips. Shields often has bosses and may be metal rimmed. Not effective shields for cavalry and are almost always carried by heavy infantry.

Shields may be from 37 to 42 inches (0.94 to 1.07 meters) high and 24 to 33 inches (0.61 to 0.84 meters) wide. Weights are between 12 and 15 lbs (5.44 and 6.80 kg.)

S.D.C.: Wood (Metal Reinforced): 125. Wood / Leather: 90.

Costs: Wood (Metal Reinforced): 150 gold. Wood / Leather: 90 gold.

Note: Recommend that players / game masters use the optional rule where weapons inflict 10% of their normal damage to shields when shields are being used to parry weapons.
