Chinese Zhenyuan class Multi-role Aircraft Carrier:
In 1998, the China purchased the unfinished Soviet carrier Varyag from the Ukraine. It took several years to manage to get it to China. It took many years to refit the carrier for Chinese service but it eventuality commissioned in the Chinese navy. It was extensively rebuilt with new radar systems and served for many decades. The J-15 fighter was at first operated and it was later replaced by the J-25N fighter although the carrier was retired soon after the revolution in new materials. It was not considered worth a full refit.
In addition to refitting the carrier, the Chinese shipyard carefully studied the carrier in order to build additional carriers. The first couple carriers were build from more or less conventional materials and powered by four gas turbine engines. Other than being gas turbine powered, these new carriers were virtual copies of the modified Varyag class. The gas turbine engines produced slightly less power than the steam plant. Each produce forty thousand horsepower for one hundred and sixty thousand horsepower. Top speed was twenty-nine to thirty knots. These carriers were given a more full refit including replacing the gas turbines with fusion turbines. Still, these were retired when replaced by new carriers. These were sold to other nations to pay for newer carriers.
These new carrier were modified versions of the older carriers built from conventional material and powered by gas turbines. Known as the Zhenyuan class, these carriers were built completely from the new high strength composites and alloys and were much tougher than refitted vessels. In addition, they had fusion turbines replacing the gas turbines. A total of six of these carriers were built. In many ways, these carriers are less advanced than Western carriers, using a ski-jump instead of catapults. The carrier design does have arrestor cables for aircraft landings.
Built slowly with around one carrier built every eight years, all six carriers remained in service until the coming of the Rifts. Rumor is that the Chinese navy planned to built four additional carriers that would have been slightly larger. Still, none had been laid down. It is unknown what happened to these carriers with the coming of the Rifts. Still, it is likely that one or more might have survived. Several lighter Chinese vessels did survive the coming of the Rifts.
Due to minor alterations in the design, the air group is slightly increased compared to the Varyag design. A total of thirty-eight fighters are usually embarked. This includes twenty-six heavy fighters, first the J-25N design and later the J-32 design. Due to delays in production of the J-32, the J-25N operated alongside the newer fighter for far longer than expected. In addition, twelve of a modified version of the Soviet Yak-141 design. Unlike the J-25 and J-32, the Yak-141 was designed for vertical take off and landing. In addition, usually four airborne electronic warfare helicopters and eight anti-submarine warfare / rescue helicopters are also embarked. Later, twenty-four Troll power armors were added.
The fighters and other embarked craft are the main weaponry of the carrier but it also is armed for self defense. This includes four HQ-24 Long Range Vertical Launch Systems for a total of thirty-two long range missiles. Theoretically, these missiles can be used against other ships but mainly designed for ship defense. In addition, the carrier has four Type 850 Combination Anti-Missile Systems. Each has a 30 mm auto-cannon and twenty-four short range missiles. Around ninety-six short range missiles are ready to fire for close range missile defense.
The Type 455 SAPARS Phased Array Radar is the main long range radar array. The radar is the same system as the Type 65 Destroyer. It has a range of greater than four hundred kilometers and can track over three hundred targets simultaneously. This is backed up by a more conventional Type 381 radar system also known as "Sea Eagle." Range of the Type 382 radar is only around one hundred kilometers and can track up to ten targets simultaneously. In addition to the radar systems, the carrier mounts the MGK-345 hull sonar although does not mount any towed array sonar system or anti-submarine weaponry. The carriers have an extensive communication array to act as flagships. They were fitted with full flag facilities for a flag of fifty officers and men. In comparison, ships crew is around one thousand personnel, air crew is around six hundred, and normally around two hundred troops are embarked.
The design does not have any stealth features either against radar or sonar systems. Built out of high strength composites and alloys, these carriers are extremely tough. The four fusion turbines are about twenty-five percent more powerful than the gas turbines carried on the previous class giving a maximum speed of thirty-two knots. The fusion turbines give almost unlimited range although they need to be refueled every ten years approximately and require periodic maintenance.

 If Arrester Cables are destroyed, Non-VTOL aircraft cannot land on the flight deck.
 If both elevators are destroyed, no aircraft can be moved from the hangers to the flight deck, meaning that they cannot be launched unless already on the flight deck.
 If the flight decks are destroyed, only VTOL aircraft can be launched or land. VTOL aircraft are at -15% to piloting.
 Destroying Type 455 Phase Array Radar system will disable primary long range search and fire control systems; Type 381 Radar System acts as medium range radar but does not have the ability to track as many targets. In addition, standard robot sensors for the time period, not needing large antennas to be effective, were installed in well-protected points in the hull as secondary systems. As well, Type 455 Phase Array panels can partially compensate for each other.
 If Bridge/ Control Tower is destroyed, the ship can still be piloted from engineering but with a -15% to piloting rolls. Communication and sensor equipment are not concentrated on the bridge to reduce the effectiveness of bridge hits.
 Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body destroys the ship’s structural integrity, causing it to sink. There are enough flotation devices and inflatable life rafts to accommodate everyone aboard.

Market Cost: Not for Sale but costs around 1.4 billion credits to construct. If found and sold on the black market would probably cost 3.5 to 7 billion credits.
- Four (4) Type 850 Combination Anti-Missile Systems: Combination
Anti-Missile Defense Systems which combines both a seven barrel 30 mm Gatling
Cannon and a short range missile launchers. Mounted on sponsons along the
hull. While mounted in one system, both defense systems have separate tracking
systems. Short range missiles are designed to be able to track and target
multiple missiles simultaneously. Gatling cannon fires burst of 20 or 40
rounds at incoming air attacks, especially missiles, usually those which
leak through the missile defense. System can be targeted against surface
targets and ground targets.
Maximum Effective Range: 30 mm Gatling Cannons: 9,840 feet (3,000 meters). Short Range Missiles: As per short range missile type (See revised bomb and missile tables for details.)
Mega Damage: 30 mm Gatling Cannons: 2D6x10 for a short burst of 20 round, 4D6x10 for a long burst of 40 rounds, and 3D6 for each round. Both bursts count as one attack. Range Missiles: As per short range missile type (Usually fragmentation) (See revised bomb and missile tables for details.)
Rate of Fire: 30 mm Gatling Cannons: Six (6) attacks per melee. (+2 to strike aircraft; +3 to strike missiles.) Short Range Missiles: Two (2) attacks per melee, can fire one at a time or in volleys of two or four.
Payload: 30 mm Gatling Cannons: 500 Rounds (2 Drums of 250) - 25 Short Bursts / 12 Long Bursts. Short Range Missiles: 24 short range missiles per mount.
- Four (4) HQ-24 Long Range Vertical Launch Systems: Mounted
on sponsons along the hull, launchers have eight cells each for a total
of forty-eight cells mounted in octagonal patterns. Launcher is not as
flexible as the Mk 41 launcher and can only fire long range missiles. Missiles
are primarily anti-air missiles although ground attack is a secondary role
of launcher. Similar multi-purpose missiles are used in both cases. As
well, anti-submarine rocket launched torpedoes can also be fired although
rarely carried. The launchers can launch at multiple targets simultaneously.

- Eight (8) Chaff Launchers: Located on the superstructure
of the ship, they are designed to confuse incoming missiles. All launchers
must be operational for the full effects. Rifts Earth decoys systems are
assumed to not be effective against Phase World / Three Galaxies missiles
due to technological difference. Reduce effects by 20% against smart
missiles (Add +20% to rolls for smart missiles) and reduce effects of
launchers by 10% per launcher not used (Add +10% to rolls per launcher
not used.) Only useful against missiles, not useful against torpedoes

- 01-35 - Enemy missile or missile volley detonates in chaff cloud - Missiles are all destroyed.
36-60 - Enemy missile or missile volley loses track of real target and veers away in wrong direction (May lock onto another target.)
61-00 - No effect, enemy missile or missile volley is still on target.
The ship has all systems standard on a robot vehicle plus the following special features:
- Type 455 SAPARS Phased Array Radar: Powerful and flexible pre-rifts radar system that is comprised of four panels that each emit radar waves. Less advanced than the phased radar system fitted on the Coalition ships but still powerful. If allowed by the horizon, the system can track out to 225 nautical miles (259.1 miles / 417.0 km) and can simultaneously track and identify up to 312 targets at one time. The system controls missile launched from the long range missile launchers and the system can track and guide each individual missile to a individual target for up to 128 targets. If a target is eliminated, missiles are automatically guided to a new target. The system can also control missiles launched from other linked vessels as well and can also act as fire control for gun mounts. The system gives a +10% to read sensory rolls and +1 on initiative
- Type 382 Radar System: Three dimensional frequence scanning radar mounted on a single rotating antenna. Acts primarily as backup for main radar array. Maximum range is 54 nautical miles (62.1 miles / 100 kilometers) and can simultaneously track and identify up to 10 targets at one time.
- MGK-345 Hull Sonar System: Mounted under the bow of the ship. Sonar system has a range of around 16 nautical miles (18.4 miles / 29.6 km). This hull sonar system has both a passive and active system built in. Sonar system can track up to 16 targets at one time
- Combination Radar Detectors and Active Jamming System: Combination of radar detection system (ESM) and an active jamming system. The system can detect another radar system at 125% of the range of the transmitting radar. In jamming mode, causes -25% to detection but when it is active, other vehicles/ bases can detect that it is jamming, and some missiles will home in on jamming signals. Jamming also causes a -4 penalty to all radar guided weapons.
- Command and Control Facilities: The carrier carries extra communications equipment and command facilities, to enable the ship to operate as the flagship for a flotilla. When operating in a flotilla, all ships get a +1 on sensor rolls, +1 to strike on all weapons, and +10% on communications.
