Jack Jones:

Name: Jack Jones.

Alignment: Scrupulous (Good).

Age: 56. Race: Human. Sex: Male. P.P.E.: 9.

Disposition:

To those who work with him, he is quite competent and steady. Will not shirk responsibly and is willing to do jobs that others might consider menial. When he sees something wrong, he will say something but not one to want to take the leadership role. One item is that he does not like doing work for the military because it brings up bad memories. His daughter has been working him on it but it is going extremely slow.

He is very quiet about his past and most people think he is just a slightly older spacer, just had a few rough patches in his life. There are enough spacers with such issues that few think much of it. In common with most spacers, there is something he loves about space but has a hard time saying exactly what it is. Sometimes just a bit of old military bearing can be seen but only those who are very aware will notice it.

He will not touch alcohol or any kind of mind altering drugs. If invited to drink or go to a club, he will always refuse, forcefully if they insist. Otherwise, he tries to not concern himself when others do so. Still, if he found out a friend was using them to excess, it would be extremely troubling to him.

He might be considered slightly overprotective of his daughter even though she is an adult. Worries about anybody she might be interested in. She has worked in clubs in the past and has been known to imbibe a bit of alcohol. He worried about that as well because he worries that it is genetic and that she could fall to it the same way he or her mother had.

Appearance:

Unlike most people from advanced planets in the Three Galaxies, he actually looks his actual age. He looks like he is in his fifties in a world without anti-aging drugs. This is because his time drinking and using drugs took a toll on his appearance. At one time, he would have been considered handsome but now has a worn look about him. Still has a reasonably pleasant face however. While he was drinking he had not been taking anti-aging drugs as well which did not help although he has been taking them again.

He is still relatively fit and is still reasonably athletic. Is pretty at almost 1.9 meters. On the craggy side, his face is still pleasant. Might have hid signs of age a bit with a beard but prefers to be clean shaven. Has soft brown eyes which seem to portray a certain kindness. He has brown hair that has been becoming grey although he is yet to be balding. Keeps it just at shoulder level, a bit longer than when he kept it while he was in the military.

For clothing, he prefers simple ship jumpsuits. Prefers greys and dark blues. Often wears a tool box as well. He does keep them clean and neat though. Has a few dress suits but does not wear them often.

Background:

Many people have their five minutes of fame and Jack Jones was one of them. A former Consortium fleet officer, he was a hero for a short time until he became a liability to the powers than be in the Consortium and fell from grace. Unfortunately, when he fell, he fell hard. However, his story is one of redemption in many ways as well.

A little bit of background on him is in order. He was never considered a brilliant officer but was always considered a capable and hard working officer. He quickly rose to the rank of full commander and was put in charge of a squadron of Proctor class heavy fighters. Was well respected by just about everybody around him, the officers over him, the junior officers in his squadron, and his enlisted crews.

There was a political coup on a planet that was threatening to break out into open war. The Consortium Armed Forces were called upon to try to keep the situation under control. Some people were trying to flee the conflict as well and the protection of them was also a priority. Eight transports had been loaded with civilians attempting to flee the erupting conflict and his squadron assigned to escort them to safety.

While under the protection of his fighters, the transports came under attack by four ships which are officially considered to have been pirate ships. However, Consortium military intelligence considers them to almost certainly have been Q-Ships of the Trans-Galactic Empire. In the engagement, hist twelve heavy fighters were able to beat back the attackers, and actually prevented the loss of any of the transports although there was some damage. In addition, his fighters were able to destroy one of the attacking vessels and damage two others.

For saving the transports, he was promoted to the rank of junior captain and presented with a distinguished service medal. As the hero of the hour, a number of prominent politicians wanted to be seen with him. Lauded by the media, there were quite a number of requests for interviews. It was these interviews and what he told the politicians that began his downfall.

Among Consortium military circles, it is well known that the Trans-Galactic Empire is involved in clandestine activities, often under the cover of pirates. However, it is kept quiet because both the senior officers and politicians who understand the situation that the Consortium is not ready for open war again. Jack had told both junior personnel and the officers over him about his ‘Suspicions’ and that could be kept reasonably quiet.

Unfortunately though, he let it slip both to various political war hawks and to the media during interviews. Not just once or twice but quite a number of times. He was cautioned by those above him to keep it quiet but he let it slip several more times. There was only so much damage control that could be done. The military leadership was forced to deal with it and he was given effectively an ultimatum that he resign from service.

Even so, he was a skilled officer and could have found work in any number of independent defense forces or mercenary companies. Many would have offered him commissions at a higher range than he had in the Consortium before being forced to resign. Something broke though when he was forced to take off the Consortium uniform.

Instead of moving on, he found himself in a downward spiral involving alcohol and drugs. For the longest time, he forgot about everything but losing himself. There were many in the leadership who were sad to see what had happened but it kept him quiet and anything he did say would be attributed to alcohol and drugs. He had been give a limited pension which paid for his downward spiral and he mostly stayed in cheap hotels and apartments.

In all probability, the alcohol and drugs would have killed him eventually, moist likely sooner not later. If not for his strong constitution, odds are that he would died already. Fate intervened however. He had sex with a woman who became pregnant. In many ways the woman was similar to him, lost to drink and drugs. Barely remembered her and it is certainly possible that she barely remembered him. It was not the first or the last woman who he had sex with that he barely remembers.

Why she decided to keep the baby is unknown but she did. Jack did not even know at the time that she had become pregnant, having only spent a single night with her. Having a child did not stop her own destructive activities and just a few weeks after giving birth she was killed in a fight at a bar. The authorities, through DNA matching, were able to find out that he was the father of the child.

The child was an absolutely gorgeous baby girl which the mother had named Kayne. The authorities really should not have given the child to him in his condition but they were most interested in absolving themselves of the responsibility. In his heart, even though he had made some bad choices, Jack was still a good man who cared. He was instantly smitten and was determined to be the best father he could be to her. The lure of drugs and alcohol was strong, to simply lose oneself, but he fought it and won.

It was easy for him to realize that his tiny pension would not let him properly support his daughter. They would end up living in run down areas at best. Instead he decided to go back into space, the one job he really knew, taking his little daughter into space along with him. It is not actually all that uncommon with a surprising number of children in space. He soon found that he still loved space and that he had missed it while he was getting intoxicated.

He would take any job available, no matter how menial, as long as the ship was clean, the crew were decent, and they were willing to have her daughter with him. Ships he served on include freighters, liners, tugs, and even salvage vessels. Only thing he avoided were ships tied to the military because that remained painful to him. Has operated fighters for some of the liners which he has served on however.

Will not talk about his past to others. While many spacer talk about their past, a surprising number keep quiet about their own pasts so he is not all that unusual. Those who he has served with find him to be a hard worker and willing to work with others although not much interested in leading.

While he was always over protective of Kayne, she grew up to be a responsible young woman, a hard worker just like her father. Just like her father, she has a love for space. It is hard to know if this is in her blood or simply because of the fact that she was raised in space. Her only “Rebellion” was the phase where she worked as a singer and dancer for a few months. Eventually though, she decided to go back to what she knew well, that of being a spacer.

Because he is getting older, recently he has decided to begin investing the money that he earns whenever possible. His daughter has been investing as well. The hope is that they will earn enough to invest it in a merchant ship of their own. Even though still uncomfortable with the idea of taking command, it is something he is working on.
