Golden Age Weaponsmiths C-5 Galaxy:

Produced by Lockheed-Martin, the C-5 Galaxy transport was the largest heavy lift aircraft operated by the United States Air Force for many years. This huge four engine cargo aircraft operated up until the Twenty-Forties, around the same time as the revolution in new materials, when it was replaced by a new model heavy transport.

Many of the old C-5 Galaxy aircraft were put into the bone yards but some were retained in reserve status. These aircraft were expected to be reactivated in times of conflict and were kept in surprisingly well protected hangers. As a result, a number of these huge transport aircraft survived until the coming of the Rifts and have been discovered. Golden Age Weaponsmith have refitted a number of these aircraft to operational condition.

The C-5 Galaxy has a massive ability to carry cargo, over one hundred and twenty thousand kilograms of cargo in a massive cargo bay. It was the only aircraft at the time of its service which could transport all army equipment. The aircraft has a large rear ramp as well as the ability of the nose of transport can be tilted upwards. As a result, the aircraft can be both unloaded and loaded at the same time, loaded through the nose while unloaded through the rear. Common cargo includes tanks, helicopters, missiles, and a wide variety of pelletized cargo items. The aircraft were also used for humanitarian missions.

While the C-5 Galaxy has the ability to carry passengers in the main cargo bay, this is uncommon. This is normally used for vehicles or other cargo. There is an upper deck compartment with the ability to carry up to seventy-five passengers. These passengers are usually crew for the equipment and / or vehicles embarked in the main cargo bay. When the cargo bay is converted to passengers, the aircraft can carry a total of three-hundred and fifty personnel.

Minimum crew for C-5 Galaxy is a crew of four; pilot, copilot, and two flight engineers. Normal crew is larger, crew of eight including a pilot, a first pilot, a copilot, two flight engineers, and three load masters. This allows for a relief crew and there are quarters onboard for sleep as well as kitchen and lavatory facilities. With airborne refueling, the aircraft have virtually unlimited range. Even when not refueled by air, the aircraft has a range of over three thousand miles with a full cargo load and over six thousand miles not carry and cargo.

Golden Age Weaponsmith refits these aircraft mainly by reinforced the aircraft's frame and skin with high strength alloys and composites. This allows them to withstand some damage. Golden Age also updates the electronics to a small degree. These converted aircraft have sold almost as soon as converted in most cases. The only major complaint has been the fuel consumption of these aircraft.

Model Number: C-5M
Vehicle Type: Quad Engine Transport Aircraft
Crew: Minimum: Four (Pilot, Copilot, and two Flight Engineers), Normal: Eight (Pilot, First Pilot, Copilot, two Flight Engineers, and three Load Masters.)
Troops/Passengers: 75 (Up to 350 in place of cargo)

M.D.C. by Location:

Front Cargo Door:250
Rear Cargo Door:250
[1] Wings (2):300 each
[2] Elevators (2):150 each
[2] Rudder:150
Cockpit:220
[3] Engines (4):160 each
Landing Gear (28):10 each
[4] Main Body:625

Notes:
[1] Destroying a wing will cause the plane to crash.
[2] Destruction of rudders or one elevator will still allow the aircraft to be controlled by the varying of power levels of the engines but transport has a penalty of -10 to dodge, and a -30% penalty to all piloting rolls. Destruction of both of the elevators will leave the plane uncontrollable and aircraft crew must evacuate to survive
[3] The destruction of one engine will reduce the transports top speed by one quarter and give the pilot a -2 penalty to dodge as well as giving a 5% penalty to piloting. The destruction of additional engines will give cumulative penalties. Destruction of all four engines will cause the aircraft to crash. Pilot may attempt a emergency landing or bomber crew can choose to eject.
[4] Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body will shut the aircraft down completely, rendering it useless and causing it to crash if in flight

Speed:
Driving on Ground (Taxiing): Only possible for take offs and landings as well as for parking and storage. Speed is 40 mph (64 kph) when traveling and not on take off or landing.
Flying: The C-5 Galaxy can reach a top speed of 564 mph (908 kph / 490 knot). The aircraft does not have an afterburner and the aircrafts normal cruise speed is 400 mph (643.7 kph / 347.6 knots) but varies on situation. The C-5 Galaxy has a maximum altitude of 43,400 feet (13,258.8 meters)
Maximum Effective Range: 3,434 miles (5,526 kilometer) with maximum payload. The C-5 Galaxy has a range with maximum fuel of 6,469 miles (10410.8 kilometers.) The C-5 Galaxy can be refueled in the air.

Statistical Data:
Height: 65 feet 2 inches (19.85 meters)
Wingspan: 222 feet 9 inches (67.88 meters)
Length: 247 feet 10 inches (75.54 meters)
Weight: 374,000 pounds (169,644 kg) empty and 837,000 pounds (379,657 kg) maximum takeoff weight
Power System: Conventional, Four 43,000 pound (19,504 kg) dry thrust General Electric TF39-GE 1C turbofans, uses aviation fuel.
Cargo: 270,000 lbs (120,000 kg)
Black Market Cost: 4.5 million credits

Weapon Systems:

  1. Anti-Missile Chaff/Flare Dispenser (1): Use the same effects as the TRIAX model. However, each time the system is engaged, the system fires off one chaff and 1D4 flares. Rifts Earth decoys systems are assumed to not operate against Phase World missiles due to technological difference. Reduce effects by 20% against smart missiles (Add +20% to rolls for smart missiles.)
    Effect:
01-50 Enemy missile or missile volley detonates in chaff cloud - Missiles are all destroyed.
51-75 Enemy missile or missile volley loses track of real target and veers away in wrong direction (May lock onto another target.)
76-00 No effect, enemy missile or missile volley is still on target.
Also note that the chaff cloud will also blind flying monsters that fly through cloud. They will suffer the following penalties: reduce melee attacks/actions, combat bonuses, and speed by half. Duration: 1D4 melee rounds.
Payload: 20 chaff, 40 flares. Each time the system is engaged, the system fires off one chaff and 1D4 flares.
