If Philanthra has one love, it is the love of scholarship and learning. Both while traveling and at home, takes meticulous records. In addition, she is a serious bookworm who absolutely loves to read whenever possible. Even when on an expedition, she usually carries a couple of books with her for her to read. This has been a bit amusing to a number of her traveling companions but her abilities are such that her companions tolerate her idiosyncrasies.

Unlike most adventurers, she is not just interested in treasure but interested in artifacts which are not particularly valuable. This does not mean that she is not interested in magic items and treasure but they are secondary. She is always on the lookout for ancient books which she has had little luck. Because she wants her writings preserved for the future, she uses books with silver rune paper.

Tends to be reserved and has a hard time making friends. One should not consider her to be unfriendly and is able to work with others. When she does make a friend, she is extremely loyal to them however. While she may be crafty at times, she is always honest with information she gives to others. In general, she is an honorable person.

Has a very composed demeanor and attempts to look professional. Even while on an expedition tries to keep herself looking neat and professions. This does not mean that she is not willing to get her hands dirty. Is a skilled archaeologist and is willing to fight as well. While not a true warrior, she is a reasonably skilled swords woman.

Philanthra’s History:

Philanthra was born on the island of Lopan. While a wealthy island for the most part, there is poverty everywhere. She had parents but they left her to her own devices for the most part which she had to survive on her own wits. They were often drunk or high on drugs. One way one might describe her might be to call her a “Street Rat.”

In part she survived by begging but also picked an occasional pocket. It could not be said that she was all that skilled at it, rarely getting more than a few coins and almost getting caught many stills. Still, there was something special about her with some of the adults around her commented about her being a precocious and intelligent child.

Somehow, a wealthy scholar named Rayhon had heard some of the stories and was looking for a child to work around his library getting books for him. The scholar approached her parents and offered to buy her for a pittance. At the time, it seemed like the most horrible thing possible, being ripped from everything she knew.

In order to be able to at least get books for her new master, she had to be taught some limited ability to read at least the binders on the books. Even though intelligent, it came as a surprise to Master Rayhon just how quickly she picked up being able to read.

Soon, whenever she could snatch a moment or two, she would read whatever she could. Philanthra not only mastered Eastern but soon picked up Elven and Western languages as well. Some of the other scholars who visited Master Rayhon commented how she seemed to be a natural scholar. Many suggested that he formally take her on as a apprentice, something he strongly resisted because he believed that those from the lower classes were mentally inferior. As well, he resisted other

Still, the young girl continued to bloom and soon virtually forgot about her previous life as a street rat. Whenever she got a break, she would read for her own enjoyment especially books about ancient history and archaeology. Did yearn for something more, a way to formalize her knowledge however. She did not want to be Master Rayhon’s book fetcher even if he did take her from her previous life of poverty.

She contemplated various options but knew she would need to leave the island. Even though she was treated well, she was indentured to him. Still, somewhere in the Western Empire or Eastern Territories, she might be able to set herself up as a young scholar. As luck had it, he passed away when she was sixteen. It was not as if it really surprised anyone, he was elderly and had never taken great care of himself. In fact, he was obese as well both smoking and drinking heavily.

Master Rayhon did not have either a will or any close kin. As a result, the courts were brought in to decide the settlement of his estate. When brought in front of the court, Philanthra argued passionate for her freedom. Dressed in the elegant robes of a scholar herself, they could not see the street rat which she had been almost a decade before. In addition, those interested in his estate were not particularly interested in her bond anyway.

Interestingly, a number of scholars, who were close to him and visited often, argued that she should inherit his estate instead of a distant relation. That did not happen, however she was given a modest sum from his estate as well as being allowed to take a few books.

For a short period of time, she worked with some of the other scholars, specifically those who treated her like a scholar not a servant. One thing she want to do however was to expand her own knowledge with actual field experience. As luck would have it, there was a group of adventurers heading for the Old Kingdom and they needed somebody with knowledge of history and archaeology. She had other gifts, such as the ability to heal, that also made her potentially valuable.

The voyage to the shores of the decimated lands was a crash course for her in being able to defend herself. Various creatures wander the lands that were once the Great Elven Kingdom and had virtually no hand to hand combat training. Luckily, she was naturally athletic and by the time the shore was reached, she was at least competent in being able to defend herself.

The expedition, as many in the Old Kingdom end up, met with mixed success. Some minor treasures were found but nothing spectacular. Her own quest, one for ancient books, met with failure. She did however take plenty of notes of her travels and make a huge number of drawings. This was the basis for a later monograph she wrote on her travels. Several of her traveling companions were badly injured and one was killed during an attack by goblins. Her own share was comparatively modest as well. Still, it was enough to begin to start a library of her own and get some better gear.

Soon enough, another adventuring group was looking for a traveling companion, this time into the Eastern Territory. Again, the expedition met with limited success with her keeping careful records of her travels. In addition, she collects various artifacts which are not valuable but help her understand what she is looking at. This has become how she operates with her being willing to join expeditions to various lands. Otherwise, she keeps a careful record which she discusses her travels as well as other historic knowledge with others for a fee. In some cases, she has also traded knowledge for minor magic items.
