Age: 22 years Sex: Female

Disposition:

While a rebel in her own way, she was never really flaunted the authority of her parents. If anything, her mother and her were two of a kind. They both have a certain disdain for normal conventions. Her father on the other hand is much more conventional although he accepts that she has to follow her own path. One of the ways she goes against the grain is in her going against conventions, not caring too much appearance and going unconventional in many respect. She is a tomboy but also likes to dye her hair exotically. While not a Goth herself, she has a number of Goth friends and is sympathetic to them.

She has always been a bit of a nerd, her interest mainly in sciences especially botany. Not her only interest, also interested in archeology. Unlike many nerds, she was always pretty athletic, enjoying various sports and loves hiking. Her hiking and botany often go hand in hand. On her long hikes, she often looks for rare plants.

Her friends are mainly nerds themselves, never one of the popular kids. Granted, college is far better than high school was. Still, her friends are extremely important to her. She has had a number of boyfriends, preferring long term romantic relationships over casual encounters. Still, she is not ready for anything permanent.

She is still learning to understand her new abilities. She considers them actually to be pretty damn cool even though it is a struggle to keep them hidden. While she does not believe that they are any sort of gift, she feels that now that she has these abilities, she needs to use them to help wherever she can.

One important item is the study of the symbiote which has become a part of her body. While not a professional scientist yet, she is mostly scientific in her thinking. As a result, she is working on studying the organism which is now a part of her. She has concerns such as if it continues growing or starts budding. In addition, she is also concerned what will happen when her symbiote is discovered.

Appearance:

Fiona is a bit on the short side at around five foot three inches in height. She is not extremely slim but has a nice figure with reasonable sized breasts and hips. Her skin is a fairly pale Caucasian and her face is slightly on the oval side. Still, she is pretty attractive with her eyes being a nice soft blue. Her hair is a very light blond although she normally dyes a few of the front locks green. When hanging loose, her hair hangs about halfway down her back. For makeup, she does not wear any normally. When she does, she wears only light makeup, at most usually painting her lips a almost natural pink and just darkening around her eyes. Does need to wear glasses.

To hide the vines when she does not need them, she will usually wear relatively loose fitting jeans and a sweat shirt or a hoodies. Sometimes might wear a long skirt as well although not very often. Otherwise, she normally wears sneakers. In general, she prefers to be comfortable over looking fashionable. One might call her a wash and wear type. Does not tend to wear much in the way of jewelry either and her ears are not pierced.

As described in the previous paragraph, her body is covered with leafy vines which sometimes will flower. Interestingly, they cover her just enough not to appear naked. When she needs them, vines which act almost like tentacles grow from small nubs in the plant on her back. They are prehensile and can be used to grab like the tail of a monkey.

Demetria’s Background:

How did I get this symbiote as part of me. From an early age, I was always interested in botany. As a result, one might think I got it from an experiment in a lab. Perhaps, due to some project I wad been working on. Perhaps, due to some sort of secret military program that they were doing in my university.

Nope, it was an accident. Still, I guess that in a very remote way, it was related to my interest in botany. Since being a young girl, I loved hiking. Used to spend almost every weekend hiking. In Northern California, there are incredible mountains and spent so of my favorite times in the mountains.

As one might expect, I loved to look for new flora to study. While walking, there was a strange patch of plants that looked like nothing I had ever seen before. It was in a deep gully that was extremely hard to climb down to. Was about halfway down when I slipped. Slid down the steep slope, probably forty meters or more.

When I finally came to a stop, I found myself in that strange patch of plants. There was an assortment of scrapes and bruises all over my body and my clothes were badly torn. That was not the worst though. My right leg hurt like nothing I had ever felt before, far worse than when I sprained my leg while playing soccer. I think it was broken. Tried to stand but immediately collapsed.

I was scared, worried that I would be unable to escape. Why hadn’t I taken anybody with me. Sometimes, I would have a friend with me during these hikes. Even if they could not get me out, at least they could have gotten help. Most of my friends though were what many considered nerds and only a few enjoyed hiking unfortunately. Always was pretty athletic. In addition to my love of hiking, played soccer in high school, ran in track and field, and took gymnastics.

The strange plants, which I had landed in the middle of, suddenly began wrapping around my body, freaking me out even more that I had been. Tried to crawl away but kept falling back onto my belly. Waves of pain went through my body as I tried to escape. Every time, I got only a few meters before falling back down again. Eventually, I ended up collapsing completely, unable to move anymore and everything faded to black.

I don’t know how long I was out. When I woke up, my leg no longer hurt and the bruises and scrapes on my arms appeared gone. The strange plants and vines though were completely wrapped around my body. The plants felt natural, as if they were part of me. It took a few more minutes for my head to clear but as soon as it did, I was able to stand without any trouble.

It felt completely natural, I was able to create a pair of tentacles of vines. Using them, I was able to easily climb out of the deep gully. As well, I could feel the plants around me. Didn’t quite know what it all meant yet although I would find out soon enough.

Soon enough, I learned that I could concentrate on plants and they would come under my control. One was that I could make them grab and entangle. As well, I could make them grow rapidly although when I stopped concentrating on them, they would return to normal. I could also make them wither although they would not bounce back. Finally, I could alter the material aspect of wood, dramatically weakening it or strengthening it.

Back on the trail, I was finally able to take stock of my situation. Always was a nerd, even in junior high school, but this was a step beyond. Having plants wrapped around my body, it would be extremely hard to have boyfriend. Granted, I had only had a handful of them but still was a romantic. While not ready for anything permanent, never cared too much for one night stands.

Stripping off my shredded clothing, I pulled my spare clothes from my backpack. Luckily, I had remembered to grab my backpack from where I had fallen. At least the plants wrapped around my body did not cover my head, neck, lower legs, upper arms, feet, and hands.

When I went back to college Monday, I tried to keep everything quiet. Went to school in the University of California. Nobody seemed to notice anything unusual. The only notice that anybody seemed to take was that I had dyed several locks of hair pink a few days before. Would dye my blond hair different colors periodically. Guess it was one way that I rebelled although I made honors a number of times.

Took a sample of the plants that now were a part of me and studied them in a lab I was able to sneak into. There was some type of mutagenic chemical infused into the plant which appeared to give them strange abilities. If I was to hazard a guess, it was from some kind of experimental chemicals which had been dumped in the gully. In addition to studying botany, I had taken a number of chemistry classes.

In my experiments, I have been unable to find any evidence that it is continuing to grow. It seems to have stabilized at its current size. So far, it seems to show no interest in budding either although that is a concern I have. I have some hypotheses but right now I prefer to continue studying it carefully. On the other hand, I think removing it is very likely to kill me. It appears deeply rooted in my body.

It was a struggle at first to hide the vines wrapped around my body. Had to come up with clothes that would hide the plants growing on my body. Found that in addition to long pants, could also hide them under a skirt. Sometimes, I liked to wear a long skirt with a set of hiking boots. Don’t think I will be able to hide it forever and concerned what will happen when that occurs

Otherwise, hiding them from my family is especially hard, even harder than with my friends. We were always extremely close even though my mother and father had separated years ago. I was in my early teens when they separated. Never found out exactly why they divorced. Unlike many divorced couples, my parents never seemed to hate each other and remained committed to my elder brother and I.

While my father had remarried a few years after the divorce, my mother had never done so although I new she had a number of boyfriends over the years. During my teen years, my parents would take turns with me. My brother graduated and entered college the year after they divorced.

I have heard that they married young, just after they graduated college. Maybe they just grew apart. My mother had settled in as an artist, painting seascapes mainly and making a reasonably comfortable living. Always was less conventional than my father. My father was an architect specializing in expensive homes for the wealthy. I think I was a bit of a disappointment in that I had no aptitude for either profession.

I have gone back into the mountains several times to look for the location of where I feel and the vines were. While I believe I have found the gully, I am not completely sure because there are many gullies that look similar. I have attempted to take samples in the gully but have not found anything else unusual. One possibility is that the plant that now a part of me used up all of the mutagenic chemicals. Otherwise, I am concerned that the chemicals could effect other organisms.

Don’t know if I can consider myself to be a super hero even now. Not that I think I would make a good villain either. Did look up to the heroes but always considered myself a slightly geeky girl prior to this. Someday, I planned to be a professor in botany or a skilled scientist. Maybe I can still achieve that goal along with using my new abilities.

Still, I get a kick out of the abilities even though I am still learning what I can do with them. Still, my abilities are quite different than any of the other heroes I have seen or heard about. There are no others who I know of who get their abilities from a plant growing on their body. Some are born with their abilities while others seem to have gotten their abilities through direct exposure to whatever gave them their abilities.

Some consider them to be gifts while others consider them curses. While mine is hard to hide and think it is only a matter of time before others find out, I don’t consider it a curse. Might have died if not for the plants allowing me to heal incredibly rapidly. Maybe somebody would have found me but there are a lot of trails which one would have to look in order to find me.

What I am going to do with them, it is hard to say. Taken the name “Demetria” from “Demeter,” the Greek goddess of the Earth. Seemed fitting with my abilities to control plants. In addition to taking sciences, I always enjoyed archaeology and loved the Greek classics.
