Walther P99 [Automatic Pistol]:

The Walther P99 was introduced in 1996. The Predecessor, the P88, did not achieve any significant sucess in the commercial market and the P99 was developed as a less expensive pistol with sugnificant improvements. The pistol is considered very reliable and accurate. Smith and Wesson produced a pistol with minor changes known as the SW99. The SW99 uses the same magazines as the P99.

The Walther P99 is a hammerless pistol unlike the P88. The P99 does not feature any manual safeties but has three automatic safeties. The pistol has an unusual ambidextrous magazine release which is integrated into the sides of the trigger guard. The pistol also has an Weaver equipment rail used for for the quick attachment of lights and lasers. The pistol has three different front blades (sights) and has adjustable rear sights. The weapon also has several different haddles to firt different hand sizes. Threaded barrels are also available.

The Walther P99 comes in four basic models. The standard model can be fired in both double action and single action modes. There is the P99DAO model has the striker at rest and is designed for a long smooth trigger pull. The double action model is also know as the P990. There is also the P99QA which has a partially preloaded striker which gives a uniform short light trigger pull. This model is a favorite among both sportsmen and police tactical units.

The Walther P99 is available in the calibers of 9 mm and .40 S&W. The striker assemblies for the P99 are the same regardless of caliber and are interchangeable. However, the strikers used in the P99, P990, and P99 QA are different. Walkther does not produce a .357 Sig version of the pistol but there are after market barrels available which change the .40 S&W version to .357 Sig. The 9 mm version has a 15 round magazine while the .40 S&W version has an 11 round magazine. There is also a rumor that there will be a .45 Auto version of the Walther P99 produced.

The Walther Pistol is available in all black, military with an olive green frame and a black slide, and titanium coated with a black frame and a titanium coated slide.
